Despite the clickbait headlines — like “The Retail Apocalypse Drags On” and “Is Amazon Killing Retail?” — retail in
general, and the brick-and-mortar store in particular, is thriving. Pure-play eCommere is not taking over the world, and far more stores are opening than closing.
According to mid-year 2019 research from retail industry analyst firm IHL, since January of 2017 the U.S. retail industry has increased sales by $565.7 billion and showed a net gain of 8,575 new stores, including quick-service and table-service restaurants. Moreover, 51 percent more chains are now opening stores.
